Academic Biography
Dr. Scott MacLeod maintains an active musical career as a singer, conductor, director, and teacher. He has appeared as a soloist in a variety of national and international venues, including Opera North, Utah Festival Opera, Opera Omaha, Central City Opera, Mobile Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Piedmont Opera, Greensboro Opera, Opera on the James, Eastern Music Festival, Center for Contemporary Opera, the Tucson Symphony, the Winston-Salem Symphony, the North Carolina Symphony, the National Symphony of Costa Rica, and Carnegie Hall.
His performances have spanned classical and musical theatre genres. Notable roles include the title characters in Don Giovanni and Gianni Schicchi, Count Almaviva in The Marriage of Figaro, Gaylord Ravenal in Show Boat, Fred/Petruchio in Kiss Me, Kate, and Frederik in A Little Night Music. Concert work includes Requiem by Brahms, Mozart, and Fauré, Handel Messiah, John Adams The Wound Dresser, BerliozL’enfance du Christ, and Vaughan Williams Five Mystical Songs and Dona Nobis Pacem. Recently he performed A Rodgers and Hammerstein Celebration and Independence Day Tour with North Carolina Symphony, Holiday Pops with the Lansing Symphony, Hercules in Patrick Morganelli’s Hercules v. Vampires with North Carolina Opera, and a workshop performance of Scott Wheeler’s The Sorrows ofFrederick with the Center for Contemporary Opera in New York City. Other recent performances include Taddeo in L’Italiana in Algeri with Piedmont Opera, Peter (Father) in Hansel & Gretelwith Greensboro Opera, From Classical to Broadway and Rob Kapilow’s The Polar Express with the North Carolina Symphony, the Fox 8/Old Dominion Holiday Triad Concert with the Winston-Salem Symphony, Pangle and Monroe in the North Carolina debut of Jennifer Higdon’s Cold Mountain (based on the Charles Frazier novel), and a solo recital of original compositions by J. Mark Scearce at the historic Municipal House in Prague.
Dr. MacLeod is Associate Professor of Voice at High Point University, where he provides individual voice training, teaches opera and musical theatre techniques, and serves as music director for HPU opera and musical theatre productions. He has led several student performance tours in Costa Rica as part of the Centro Cultural Costarricense/Norteamericano “Promising Artists of the 21st Century” program, and he was HPU faculty leader for the Prague Institute in spring semester 2015. He spent two summers as a guest artist/lecturer in China and was awarded an honorary faculty post at Shaoguan University (Guangdong, China) in 2017. He also serves as chorus master for North Carolina Opera. He holds degrees from Northwestern University, Florida State University, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
